(Mt 22,34-40) ¿Era la envidia lo que movía a saduceos, sumos sacerdotes o fariseos a preguntarle continuamente a Jesús y ponerlo a prueba? Tal vez era la molestia que producía un nuevo profeta en medio del pueblo, un maestro que hablaba con autoridad, que realizaba grandes signos y prodigios evidentes, lo que irritaba a este grupo de personas. Pero lo más claro es que las palabras directas de Jesús criticando el mal uso de la religión que se estaba haciendo en su época hacían saltar chispas.
En esta ocasión, de nuevo los fariseos se acercan a Jesús y le hacen una pregunta interesante. De todos los mandamientos que tenemos, que se habían multiplicado desde los diez que Moisés recibió en el Sinaí, ¿cuál es el principal? Obligaban al Maestro a escoger de entre todos uno que sobresaliera; seguramente que ya tenían sus respuestas preparadas y sus comentarios inquisidores en contra del nuevo Rabí, pero tal vez se quedaron con las ganas.
El primero que señala es una oración repetida continuamente por los israelitas; amarás al Señor tu Dios, con todo tu corazón con toda tu alma y con toda tu mente; una frase que se había grabado en corazón de todos y que se repetía en multitud de ocasiones a lo largo del día; el Señor por encima de todo, en la mente, en los pensamientos, en el corazón. Somos del Señor y al Señor caminamos. Este mandamiento resume la historia de la Biblia: Dios habla y está presente en el corazón del hombre.
El segundo es semejante a éste: amar al prójimo como a ti mismo; es cierto que este mandamiento era importante, pero no hasta tal punto de asemejarlo al shemá, al que Jesús había anunciado como el principal. El prójimo debe ser tratado como a mí me gustaría que me tratasen. Y tan importante es el que está a mi lado, como lo soy yo, por eso debo cuidar de él y sentirme responsable de su suerte. Amar al prójimo, no sólo es amarme a mí mismo, que resultaría egoísta, sino amar al mismo Dios, puesto que ambos mandamientos son semejantes.
Amar al prójimo como a uno mismo es la consecuencia del amor a Dios; el que ama a Dios ama al hermano, y se ama a sí mismo; no se puede decir que amamos a Dios y no amamos a los hermanos: sería mentira e hipocresía. Jesús lo queda patente: Dios vive dentro de vosotros y amarlo con todo el corazón y con toda el alma es, más que un mandamiento, una necesidad del corazón. Amar al prójimo como a ti mismo no es más que mirar con los ojos divinos el rostro divino del hermano.
Aquí reside todo lo que se escribió en la Ley y todo lo que anunciaron los profetas; amor a Dios que se vive también en el hermano.
