¿Qué haré para heredar la vida eterna? Esta pregunta le sirvió a Jesús para presentar la hermosa lección del buen samaritano. Aquél letrado buscaba su propia salvación y encontró a miles de hermanos necesitados de ayuda. Jesús conoce bien el corazón del hombre y une el amor a Dios con el amor al prójimo.
Continuamente repetían la oración del shemá los israelitas; tanto si iban de viaje como si estaban en casa; una oración que recordaba el amor a Dios en primer lugar y por encima de todo, no guardándose nada para uno mismo, sino entregando todo lo que uno es y tiene al que es principio y fin del universo. Junto al amor a Dios, Jesús une otro mandamiento judío (no olvidado en el Antiguo Testamento): amar al prójimo como a ti mismo.
Quien dice amar a Dios, al que no ve, y no ama al prójimo, que sí ve, es un mentiroso. Por eso la parábola que propone Jesús al letrado no pretende sino aclarar la necesidad del amor al que lo necesita. El sacerdote y el levita deberían haber socorrido oficialmente a aquél herido. Y digo oficialmente porque a los ojos del pueblo eran los justos, los que se dedicaban al culto y a la oración. Sin embargo tuvo que ser un samaritano, alguien casi despreciado por los judíos, el que amó como se debe.
Practicar la misericordia, el amor, el perdón, la ayuda generosa, la gratuidad, no está de moda. No porque siempre buscamos recompensa, reconocimiento, compensación y agradecimiento. Y al mismo tiempo decimos que amamos a Dios y que creemos en Él. Hoy nos queda muy claro, amor a Dios y amor al prójimo están unidos.
Pero ¿para qué sirve todo esto? La pregunta del letrado iba entorno a la vida eterna. Quizá ha desaparecido de nuestro horizonte esta meta. Tendremos que recordar que nuestra vida es caduca, que nacemos y morimos, que estamos de paso en esta vida y que nos espera toda una eternidad junto a Dios… si es que lo hemos amado. En el amor a Dios y al prójimo nos jugamos nuestra felicidad, porque nuestra vida no descansará hasta que esté junto a quien nos ha creado.
Tengamos los ojos bien abiertos para que, al menos, podamos considerarnos como ese samaritano que hizo lo que debía con misericordia. No volvamos la mirada ni demos un rodeo. Dios puede estar en cada esquina que doblemos.
