Alguien que estaba acostumbrado a leer la Torah y a saberse de memoria la multitud de mandamientos que en ella existían, quiere escuchar por boca de Jesús cuál es el principal de entre todos ellos. Parece una pregunta simple, pero si nos pusiéramos en la mentalidad judía y en lo mucho de legalismo que existía en la sociedad, caeremos en la cuenta de que es una pregunta sobre el sentido de la Ley.
¿De qué sirven tantos mandamientos? ¿Para qué tantas normas y reglas? ¿A qué debo atender en primer lugar? Quizá el corazón de aquel letrado estaba inquieto con todas estas preguntas y por eso se acerca al Maestro buscando una respuesta que satisficiera sus dudas y sus ansias de ser fiel a Dios, que es lo principal.
La respuesta es clara: Ama a Dios y ama a tu prójimo. Y es que ya sabemos que ambos mandamientos van tan unidos que uno no tiene sentido sin el otro; aquél que dice amar a Dios, al que no ve, y no ama a su hermano, al que ve… es un mentiroso. Tan sencillo como eso y tan exigente como las palabras que resumían toda la Ley.
Nuestras mentalidades están cambiando con los tiempos; y a veces es bueno recordar que el amor al prójimo es un acto de amor al mismo Dios; muchas veces se nos ha recordado que no es suficiente con ir a la Iglesia y golpearse el pecho, colocándose en los primeros puestos y luego salir y pisotear al primero que vemos. Ya sabemos que no sería más que pura hipocresía vivir de ese modo.
Pero también hemos de tener claro que el motor que ha de impulsarnos a vivir la caridad con nuestros hermanos proviene del amor primero de Dios. Nos lo recordaba Benedicto XVI en su carta encíclica “Dios es amor”: Hemos sido amados por Dios con una generosidad sin límites y es la cruz y la resurrección de Cristo lo que nos anima a vivir el amor a nuestros hermanos.
El amor a Dios y el amor al prójimo están tan unidos que uno no tiene sentido sin el otro; no está cerca del Reino de Dios quien está convencido de esto, y no camina lejos de la senda que va marcando Cristo quien lo vive en serio, aunque a veces tenga que ir contracorriente.
