Muchas personas buscaban al Maestro e iban detrás de Él por diversas razones; Jesús les hace caer en la cuenta de lo principal en este evangelio. No sólo lo buscaban por su Palabra, que daba vida, sino porque les alimentaba humanamente. Pero no debe ser esa la razón que moviera a sus seguidores a ir tras sus huellas, sino el ansia del alimento que da la vida eterna.
Difícil de entender estas palabras para los que no reconocen en Jesús al Hijo de Dios. Sus signos eran claros, los ciegos veían, los cojos andaban y a los pobres se les anunciaba el reino de Dios; más allá del alimento terrenal, Jesús también ofrecía un pan eterno, una palabra que resonaría en el corazón de todos aquellos que le aceptan como el enviado, el nuevo Moisés.
Señalando a su Padre, como quien regala el verdadero pan del cielo, Jesús quiere mostrarse al pueblo como un nuevo Moisés que viene a dar el verdadero cumplimiento a la Ley y los profetas; se presenta como el verdadero pan que salta hasta la vida eterna, queriendo anticipar así el auténtico sentido de su última cena y de la Eucaristía.
Las líneas de este evangelio pueden plantearnos muchas cuestiones; entre ellas la misma que Jesús hizo a los que le buscaban: ¿por qué acudimos a Él? Mucha gente seguía a aquél nuevo maestro por la cantidad de milagros que hacía, porque hablaba de un modo distinto, por su personalidad, incluso, porque alimentaba su cuerpo, y no sólo su espíritu.
¿Por qué buscamos a Dios? Decía San Agustín que nuestro corazón no descansa hasta que nos encontremos cara a cara con el que nos ha dado la vida; buscamos respuestas al origen del mundo, de la vida; o quizá sólo levantamos nuestra mirada al cielo cuando nos encontramos en dificultades.
Jesús es el verdadero pan del cielo, quien nos da la verdadera vida y quien hace de nosotros hombres y mujeres en plenitud; nuestro corazón no descansa hasta que nos encontremos cara a cara con Él y entendamos que Dios no es solo un tapa-agujeros que está aquí para solucionarnos nuestros problemas. Él es mucho más; Él nos ha regalado todo un camino para descubrir el amor aquí en la tierra, anticipando el banquete eterno en el que nos quiere sentar como invitados.
¿Queremos volver a tener hambre o sed? ¿O preferimos sentarnos a la mesa de la vida y alimentarnos del verdadero pan del cielo? Cristo una vez más se hace el encontradizo con nosotros. Vivamos nuestra fe en la esperanza de esta vida eterna.
