Algunos dicen que no sabemos qué hay después de la muerte, en el más allá, porque de allí nadie ha venido a contarnos nada. Los cristianos sabemos de dónde venimos y adónde vamos porque Jesús vino de parte del Padre a revelarnos la vida eterna y a indicarnos el camino hacia ella. Él mismo nos precedió para prepararnos allí una morada en la casa del Padre (Juan 14,1–12). No es mérito nuestro el saber esto ni por ello somos superiores a los demás. Pero somos portadores de una esperanza para todo el mundo. No nos dejemos arrebatar la esperanza, como nos lo ha recordado el papa Francisco.
El apóstol Tomás se hizo el portavoz de todos los inquietos y declaró que no conocíamos el lugar de destino y por tanto tampoco el camino. Jesús hizo entonces la gran revelación que despeja todas nuestras dudas e incógnitas. Él es el camino, la verdad y la vida. Queda claro que nuestro destino es el Padre. La única vía de acceso es Jesús mismo. Lo es porque Jesús es la revelación del Padre, la verdad. En Él se nos desvela el misterio de Dios, que es a la vez el misterio del hombre, el misterio de su amor por nosotros.
Al revelársenos en Jesús la verdad auténtica del hombre, Él es la vida, la vida eterna. La persona de Jesús es pues la respuesta a todas nuestras preguntas e inquietudes. Como Él, también nosotros venimos de Dios y vamos a Dios con Cristo Jesús. Conocer íntimamente la persona de Jesús es conocer amorosamente la persona del Padre. La única manera de conocer al Padre, de tener trato íntimo con Él, es la persona de Jesús.
Pero de nuevo se manifiesta el despiste de los discípulos, en este caso de Felipe. Éste pide simplemente que le muestre a Dios y todo lo demás sobra. Jesús se da cuenta de que su vida y enseñanzas han ayudado poco a los discípulos. Todavía no han sido capaces de descubrir en su persona la persona del Padre. No se han dado cuenta de que la persona de Jesús tan sólo se entiende a partir de Dios, como revelación definitiva de Dios. Los discípulos hubieran debido darse cuenta de que a través de Jesús era el Padre el que estaba hablando con ellos. En la persona de Jesús era el Padre el que estaba actuando, realizando aquellas obras maravillosas y sobrehumanas.
Esta unión indisociable entre Jesús y el Padre implica también la unión entre Jesús y el creyente. Éste hará las mismas obras de Jesús, y aún mayores, pues Dios actuará en él, al irse Jesús al Padre. La gran obra de Jesús se prolonga en la Iglesia, una Iglesia carismática y ministerial, sobre todo al servicio de los necesitados (Hechos 6,1–79. En ella todos somos miembros activos, que contribuyen a su edificación para el bien del mundo (1Pedro 2,4–9). La Iglesia, para ser creíble, tiene que seguir realizando las mismas obras de liberación que hizo Jesús durante su vida mortal. Él actúa hoy a través de los creyentes que somos sus colaboradores en la obra de salvación de los hombres. De manera especial la Iglesia se construye en torno a la eucaristía porque en ella hacemos presente la salvación de Dios que irrumpe constantemente en la historia de los hombres.
