EL DERECHO DE TODOS A LA SALUD
En el año 2012 la Campaña de Manos Unidas reclama el cumplimiento del Objetivo 6 del Milenio, la protección del derecho de todos a la salud, combatiendo el VIH/Sida, el paludismo o malaria, y las enfermedades olvidadas, que, pese a serlo, son especialmente virulentas entre los más pobres. Y quiere ser una defensa del desarrollo integral de cada persona y de la humanidad, porque la salud y el desarrollo caminan juntos. Nadie puede permanecer indiferente ante el hambre, la miseria y la injusticia.
Jesucristo asumió el sufrimiento humano. Pasó por el mundo haciendo el bien y curando enfermedades que nos hablan de la necesidad de ser sanados de una enfermedad más profunda: la de vivir como si Dios no existiera y dando la espalda al prójimo.
Todos somos responsables de alcanzar este objetivo: los poderes públicos deben garantizar los tratamientos preventivos y terapéuticos necesarios y cada uno de nosotros conocer la gravedad del problema y actuar en consecuencia. Así entendido, el derecho a la salud es una cuestión de justicia social y de responsabilidad personal.
Exigimos que la enfermedad no sea un negocio multimillonario
El 97% de las muertes por enfermedades infecciosas tiene lugar en los países en desarrollo. A pesar de ello, la investigación farmacológica se centra, prácticamente, en los problemas de los países desarrollados. Es decir, el derecho a la salud está totalmente condicionado por la desigualdad económica.
Haber convertido la salud en un negocio multimillonario es un escándalo que tenemos que denunciar. La Santa Sede ya ha pedido varias veces a las grandes farmacéuticas que rebajen los precios de los fármacos y garanticen a todos el acceso a los medicamentos (1).
La Declaración de Doha establece que la protección de la propiedad intelectual no puede impedir la protección de la salud de los países más pobres y reconoce su derecho a producir, exportar e importar genéricos, es decir, fármacos con principios activos protegidos por patentes, pero con un coste de producción más bajo. Pero los países más ricos y las multinacionales farmacéuticas incumplen este acuerdo.
