De nuevo la gente sigue los pasos de Jesús, porque habían visto los signos que había realizado y porque encontraban en sus palabras un aliento de esperanza que llenaba sus corazones vacíos. Rodeado de los suyos, de los que Él mismo había escogido anteriormente para que estuvieran con Él, Cristo se dirige a Felipe haciéndole una pregunta singular: ¿de dónde va a comer tanta gente? Parece como si quisiera ponerle a prueba, pues bien sabía Él lo que iba a hacer después.
Y es que la palabra que pronuncia Jesús en esta ocasión también va a acompañada por el alimento. No sólo quería que su gente escuchara su mensaje, sino que tuvieran fuerza necesaria para continuar en el camino. Y esa fuerza sólo podría tenerse con el alimento, tanto espiritual como corporal.
Como preludio de la última cena, pronuncia la bendición sobre aquellos panes y peces que el muchacho quiso compartir con toda la multitud; un milagro que asombraría más tarde a los que allí estaban y que fue iluminado a la luz de la resurrección.
Unos pocos panes y un par de peces repartidos entre los cinco mil hombres, hicieron recobrar fuerzas tras la predicación a los que le habían escuchado atentamente y le habían seguido por multitud de lugares con el corazón esperanzado en el Mesías que estaban descubriendo.
Lo llamativo del texto no es solamente el milagro de la multiplicación, o las sobras que recogieron, esos doce cestos, número tan conocido bíblicamente. Lo curioso de todo es que Jesús se retira al final, porque querían proclamarlo rey. Pero el reino que había venido a instaurar se alejaba de las expectativas de aquella gente.
Milagros, curaciones, dichos y gestos que habían captado el corazón de muchas personas; todo ello ayudaría a proclamar un rey judío de entre los judíos; pero Jesús no quería ser rey al modo humano; no buscaba corona, ni territorios sobre los que gobernar; su reino se basaba en la libertad y la justicia, en la victoria sobre la muerte, derrotada en el madero de la cruz.
Había venido a proclamar un reino, pero no quería ser rey como los hombres; llamativo y contradictorio al mismo tiempo; pero así es Cristo. Se retira a la montaña sólo, abandonando la fama que le había procurado esa última multiplicación. A rezar, a pedirle a su Padre que se cumpla su voluntad y no la suya propia.
