Los hombres buscamos la alegría y la felicidad. Muchas veces, sin embargo, experimentamos el vacío y la soledad. Desgraciadamente creemos que ese vacío se puede llenar con cosas y que éstas nos van a dar la felicidad. En realidad tan sólo se encuentra la alegría en unas relaciones sanas, en las que uno puede amar y ser amado. El secreto de la alegría de Jesús es su relación amorosa con el Padre (Juan 15,9–17). El amor da alegría. Si se trata del amor de Dios, la alegría es plena.
Dios nos ama de manera incondicional. Nos ama y nos acepta tal como somos. Nos ama, no porque necesite de nosotros, sino porque él goza amándonos y entregándose a nosotros. Nuestro amor, en cambio, incluso el más puro, implica también el deseo de ser amado para así sentirnos verdaderamente personas. Sólo existimos en relación con los demás.
Jesús vive su amor en la obediencia filial al Padre. Permanecer en el amor de Cristo y guardar sus mandamientos es el secreto de la felicidad porque nos permite vivir en compañía de Cristo y experimentar su amor. Aquí el mandamiento nuevo del amor, amar como Jesús nos amó, alcanza todo su horizonte de infinitud. Jesús nos ha amado como el Padre lo amó. Se trata de un amor divino. Jesús recibe todo del Padre, recibe el amor del Padre y lo da a sus amigos mediante el Espíritu de amor. El horizonte de la vida cristiana es el amor.
Nuestro amor es la respuesta a alguien que nos ha amado primero, que nos ha manifestado su amor a través de la entrega de su vida hasta la muerte y ha hecho de nosotros sus amigos (1 Juan 4,7–10). Entre amigos no hay secretos, todo se dice y se comparte. La religión cristiana no es una religión de sumisión sino de amor a Dios, para compartir con él toda su intimidad y confiarle toda nuestra intimidad.
Elegimos los amigos. Eso es lo que hizo Jesús: nos ha elegido antes de que nosotros pensáramos en elegirle a Él. El nos ha manifestado lo que era su realidad más íntima e importante, su relación con el Padre. No se ha guardado ningún secreto, nos los ha confiado todos, de manera que podemos saber cómo es Dios y cómo vive en nosotros.
La intimidad con Jesús y con el Padre transforma la vida de los creyentes y les lleva a derribar las barreras que artificialmente levantamos los hombres. Pedro tuvo la valentía de reconocer la acción del Espíritu de Dios entre los paganos y los admitió a la fe cristiana (Hechos 10,34–48). El amor cristiano es universal, porque Cristo murió por todos, incluso por sus enemigos. El amor cristiano está llamada a transformar totalmente el mundo creando una civilización del amor fundada en la justicia, la fraternidad, la paz, el respeto de la creación.
El amor es el verdadero secreto del conocimiento. Tan sólo el que ama conoce verdaderamente al otro y lo respeta en su originalidad. Conocemos al otro en la medida en que él quiere abrirse y comunicar su intimidad. De lo contrario conocemos tan sólo las apariencias, su conducta externa, pero ignoramos los motivos de por qué obra así.
Los amigos se reúnen muchas veces para comer juntos. Compartiendo el mismo pan uno se nutre del mismo alimento. En la Eucaristía celebramos la Cena con los amigos de Jesús y sellamos nuestra amistad bebiendo del mismo cáliz. Que nuestra amistad sea cada vez más fuerte y que formemos un grupo de amigos de Jesús abierto, al que se vayan incorporando otros muchos.
