La Palabra de Dios nos ha sido proclamada. Ahora nos toca reflexionar sobre ella. La primera lectura la hemos tomado del libro del Éxodo. En aquella época se tenía por pobres y necesitados a los extranjeros que habían tenido que abandonar sus lugares de origen para encontrar un pedazo de pan; a las viudas y a los huérfanos que se habían quedado sin la protección de un esposo o de un padre y aquellos que, no teniendo casi nada, dependían de la caridad de los demás y de lo que les pudieran prestar, muchas veces a un gran interés, otros más pudientes. El autor del libro recuerda que si éstos son los pobres por excelencia, éstos son los que deben recibir, en mayor medida, el amor y la solidaridad de los creyentes. Y les da una poderosa razón: Dios ha tomado ya partido por los pobres y necesitados. Son sus preferidos. Lo que hagan o dejen de hacer con ellos va a ser examinado por el Señor.
Hoy también la Palabra de Dios nos invita a mirar a nuestro alrededor y a descubrir, quizás muy cerca de nosotros, a los pobres y necesitados y a preguntarnos qué es lo que podemos hacer: qué obras concretas de solidaridad estamos llamados a poner en práctica. A veces, será cuestión de compartir nuestro dinero y nuestros bienes. En otras ocasiones se tratará, más bien, de compartir nuestro tiempo, nuestras manos, nuestro corazón.
La segunda lectura la hemos tomado de la carta de San Pablo a los Tesalonicenses. Las palabras que les dirige son palabras de felicitación porque se habían tomado tan en seriola Feque su vivencia cristiana llamaba poderosamente la atención de sus conciudadanos paganos. El testimonio de estos cristianos estaba haciendo más en favor de la evangelización que si se hubieran dedicado directamente a la predicación, hasta el punto de que facilitaban enormemente la labor evangelizadora del mismo Pablo. El ejemplo de esta comunidad nos interpela hoy a nosotros. ¿Cómo es la calidad de nuestra vivencia cristiana?
El relato evangélico lo hemos tomado de San Mateo. En tiempos de Jesús se sabía que el amor a Dios era el mandamiento más importante y que importante era también el amor al prójimo. La originalidad de Jesús viene por el alcance que da a la palabra prójimo. Mientras que, en aquel entonces, prójimo era solo el del propio pueblo o aquel con el que se convivía, para Jesús “Prójimo” es todo ser humano, cercano o lejano, amigo o enemigo. El amor al prójimo es el amor a todos sin excepción. El cristiano es el hombre que no deja a nadie fuera del alcance de su amor, de su ayuda, de su solidaridad. Para un cristiano no hay fronteras, no hay límites en esta materia.
