III.1. Nos encontramos con dos parábolas del buen comportamiento en la mesa. El texto de Lucas está bien construido. En la primera Jesús se dirige a los comensales a propósito del puesto que deben ocupar cuando son invitados (vv. 7–11) y en la segunda se dirige a quien invita para que haga una buena elección de los invitados (vv.12–14). Claro, que nada es lógico en estas parábolas, porque sucede que cuando somos invitados nos gustaría ser de los principales; y cuando invitamos nos gustaría hacerlo teniendo en cuenta la importancia de los mismos. No es eso lo que se propone en este conjunto, que toma la “mesa” como símbolo casi religioso. Las famosas “comunidades” fariseas (havurah/havurot, de haver, amigo), tenían cuidado de no invitar a nadie que no cumplieran con normas estrechas de comportamiento, de preceptos, de comidas kosher, etc.. No era admitido cualquiera a estas havurot. Por eso tiene mucho sentido las propuestas “alternativas” de Jesús a los suyos. En la mesa se compartía amistad e ideas, y por eso tenía tanta importancia.
III.2. El evangelio, como ya se ha puesto de manifiesto, se nos propone la humildad. ¿Por qué, para ser un buen seguidor de Jesús es necesario ser el último, el servidor de todos? ¿No es una falsedad aparentar lo que no se es? Aquí no cabe otra explicación que el mismo misterio de la condescendencia divina, que siendo poderoso, se ha hecho como uno de nosotros. La parábola de los primeros y los últimos puestos en un banquete le sirve a Jesús para poner de manifiesto la humildad. El marco de esta parábola es la de un sábado en que Jesús es invitado a casa de un fariseo. Los fariseos, sus escribas, no gozan de buen nombre en el evangelio (Lc 20,46–47). ¿No es bueno aspirar a ser el primero, el mejor, el más perfecto? Si lo miramos desde la perspectiva de los deportistas en las Olimpiadas parecería que no es muy acertada la proposición de Jesús, aunque hoy sabemos que solamente gana uno; y muchos deportistas nos dan la lección de que es tan importante participar como ganar.
III.3. De alguna forma este ejemplo lo podíamos aplicar a la vida cristiana: todos valen en una comunidad, todos tienen algo positivo, todos tienen algo bueno. No importa ser los primeros si ser el primero nos lleva a ser arrogantes e inmisericordes. Por eso la segunda parábola de la lectura de hoy pide que no invitemos o compartamos nuestra amistad con los que nos van a pagar, sino con aquellos que no pueden responder a nuestra generosidad. Y es que el tema de la humildad, cristianamente hablado, se resuelve en la generosidad. El que es humilde es generoso, misericordioso con los otros. Esa es la razón por la que la humildad cristiana es actitud sabia y principio de amor.
