Las grandes catedrales se están convirtiendo cada vez más en museos, con su billete de entrada incluido. El hombre moderno es sensible al lenguaje artístico y la Iglesia ha sido la gran patrocinadora del arte hasta hace dos siglos. Cuando el turista visita las catedrales suele prescindir de todo recuerdo religioso. Esto hace que éstas vayan perdiendo su identidad religiosa, sobre todo si no hay unos guías que ayuden a percibir el mensaje cristiano en ellas contenido.
Para el judaísmo y las religiones antiguas, el templo era el lugar privilegiado de encuentro con Dios pues es la casa de Dios. El conflicto con las autoridades religioso-políticas a propósito del templo fue probablemente decisivo a la hora de la intervención para arrestar a Jesús. La actuación de Jesús en el templo ponía en entredicho la actividad que en él se realizaba. Jesús aparecía como persona peligrosa para la estabilidad social y política (Jn 2,13–22).
El templo como casa de Dios era el lugar del culto que permite el encuentro con Dios y asegura su bendición para el pueblo. La fuente de agua viva brota del templo de Dios (Ez 47,1–12). Era sin duda también el lugar de oración como medio también de relacionarse con Dios. Pero el culto exigía todo un montaje económico y comercial, que los sacerdotes habían utilizado para sus intereses, sin separar lo religioso de lo profano. De esa manera se había convertido en un mercado, en una cueva de ladrones, dijo ya Jeremías.
Jesús interviene como profeta que quiere restaurar el uso cultual del templo y echar fuera lo que tenía de mercado. Pero así chocaba directamente con los intereses de los sacerdotes, que vivían de los beneficios del templo. Toda la economía de Jerusalén estaba centrada en el templo. Atacar ese sistema era atacar los fundamentos económicos del país.
¿Quién era aquél que se atrevía a intervenir en el templo y a dictar lo que se debía o no se debía hacer en él? La respuesta de Jesús legitima su intervención en nombre de su propia persona de Resucitado que tiene autoridad sobre todo. Con la resurrección de Jesús ya no es posible tener un templo, una casa para Dios. Dios ya no habita en una casa donde se está quietecito sin inquietar mucho a las personas sino que despliega constantemente su acción a través de Jesús resucitado. Dios habita en Jesús y en Él lo podemos encontrar. De esa manera quedaba abolido todo el sistema cultual judío y se introducía un nuevo culto en el que se celebra la salvación en Cristo.
Algunos cristianos siguen aferrados todavía a la imagen del templo morada de Dios y creen que nuestras iglesias son sin más los templos de Dios. El cristianismo no tiene templo sino iglesias, es decir, asambleas de creyentes convocados para escuchar la Palabra de Dios. Mientras el templo evoca un edificio estático, la iglesia es una realidad dinámica que acontece al reunir a los creyentes para escuchar la Palabra.
El memorial de ese culto será la eucaristía. Un culto que debe llevarnos a descubrir a Dios en el hombre (1 Cor 3,9–17), pues por la encarnación el Hijo de Dios se ha unido en cierto sentido a cada hombre.
