Mt 16,13-20) Es hermoso imaginar las situaciones que presenta el evangelio y tratar de hacer un montaje como si fuese una película. En esta ocasión es un diálogo con sus discípulos; la fama del Maestro se había extendido por muchas regiones; sus milagros le precedían y sus palabras iban calando en el interior de los que le escuchaban. Pero quería saber cuál era la opinión de aquellos que se consideraban sus seguidores.
La gente le comparaba al Bautista, o a uno de de los grandes profetas del Antiguo Testamento, a modo de reencarnación. Jesús se interesaba por lo que pensaban los demás sobre Él. Pero va más allá; la pregunta se torna más personal cuando la dirige a sus discípulos: después de todo lo que habéis visto y oído… ¿quién decís que soy yo?
Sobran ya los comentarios de los demás, lo que han escuchado a los otros que le seguían por el camino y habían participado en sus milagros; ahora quiere saber qué opinan sus más íntimos seguidores. Se interesa por la opinión que tienen ellos; ¿quién era Jesús para aquellos doce hombres que iban tras sus huellas?
Y como tantas veces, el impetuoso Pedro responde: Tú eres el Mesías, el Hijo de Dios vivo. Le faltó tiempo a Pedro para responder; ¡pero dio en el clavo! Se admira de su respuesta y le llama feliz porque eso se lo ha revelado su Padre que está en el cielo.
En esa confesión Jesús constituye a Pedro fundamento de su Iglesia, de su comunidad, de sus seguidores; será Simón quién dará firmeza a sus hermanos, una roca que es baluarte para todos los que descubren al Hijo de Dios y le confiesan como tal. Pedro aún no entiende estas palabras, sin embargo, años más tarde deberá recordarlas para tomar las riendas de la comunidad fundada en Jesucristo.
Lo que desates en la tierra quedará desatado en el cielo; con la autoridad, que no poder, propia de Jesús, Pedro se convertirá en Vicario del mismo Cristo; una roca que se ha fundado también sobre la debilidad humana, si recordamos su triple negación tiempo después en Jerusalén. Quizá quiso escoger Jesús a Simón Pedro por esta fortaleza vacilante del discípulo; un hombre impetuoso, que seguía fielmente a su Maestro, pero débil también en las dificultades. ¡Y es que somos Iglesia santa porque nuestro fundador es Santo, pero Iglesia pecadora, porque esta comunidad está llena de infidelidades!
Pero no había llegado aún la hora para que los discípulos pregonaran a todos los pueblos que Jesús era el Mesías. Quizá por eso les pide a sus discípulos que no dijeran nada a nadie, que no revelasen que Él era el Mesías; un secreto que poco a poco irá perdiendo su ocultismo y se dará a conocer a todas las gentes.
Y desde entonces muchos le confesamos, como Pedro, el Hijo del Dios Vivo.
