El papa Francisco ha denunciado la nueva idolatría del dinero. El dinero nos gobierna en vez de estar a nuestro servicio. Detrás de esta actitud está el rechazo de la ética, el rechazo de Dios. Se mira la ética con un desprecio burlón porque relativiza el dinero y el poder. La ética, en efecto, lleva a un Dios que espera una respuesta comprometida. Dios constituye una amenaza para las categorías del mercado porque no se deja manejar.
Jesús en el evangelio de hoy no intentó bendecir el sistema del máximo lucro hoy imperante, pero describe la situación de su tiempo con una gran agudeza. Hoy día, para nosotros esa realidad es todavía más evidente. Los ricos son cada vez más ricos y los que no tienen se ven despojados de lo que tienen (Mt 25,14–30).
Jesús no quería hablar de economía sino de la vida, de lo que uno tiene que hacer para darle un sentido. Y con toda la tradición bíblica Jesús cree que es a través de nuestras acciones como damos un sentido a la vida. Está totalmente alejado de la mentalidad griega que recomienda la contemplación y desprecia la acción y el trabajo manual. Los modelos de vida que presenta el Antiguo como el Nuevo Testamento son hombres y mujeres de acción (Prov 31,10–31). La acción, sin duda, comporta una reflexión que precede a la toma de decisiones. Por eso es necesario estar siempre despejados y vigilantes (1 Tes 5,1–6). Son las decisiones y las acciones las que cambian la vida y la historia de los hombres.
Esas acciones se rigen por el principio de responsabilidad. Todos somos responsables de los dones que hemos recibido de Dios, el primero de ellos la vida. Somos administradores de esos dones que se nos han confiado y tendremos que dar cuenta de su uso. En el sentido de la parábola, la vida no nos ha sido dada simplemente para disfrutarla y consumirla. La vida nos ha sido dada para darla, para que produzca vida. No se la puede enterrar bajo tierra. Desgraciadamente el hombre actual, que es tan listo para hacer producir al dinero, ha ido olvidando la sabiduría de la vida y muchas veces no sabe qué hacer con la vida más allá de disfrutarla y consumirla en sensaciones agradables y excitantes. De esta manera estamos creando una cultura contra la vida.
Los autores espirituales, que en general han sido hombres y mujeres de acción, recomiendan toda una serie de medios para alcanzar los fines que uno se propone en la vida cristiana. Sin los sacramentos, la oración y el examen diario, la dirección espiritual y el proyecto personal de vida es muy difícil avanzar en la vida espiritual. Sería como el que hoy día quisiera administrar una empresa sin hacer unos presupuestos y llevar una contabilidad rigurosa. Que la celebración de la eucaristía nos dé ese caudal de gracia que necesitamos para hacer de Jesús el centro de nuestras vidas.
