¡Nadie daba de comer al pobre Lázaro, mientras en la casa del rico sobraba de todo y se vivía espléndidamente! Seguro que nos resulta familiar esta escena; estamos demasiado acostumbrados a vivirla en nuestro mundo. En muchos hogares sobra de todo, mientras que en otros países aún se sufre la lacra del hambre y la enfermedad. Pero todo tiene su repercusión en la otra vida. Y así fue; murieron ambos y cada cual recibió su recompensa. Lázaro fue al seno de Abraham, y el rico al infierno, despojado de todo lo que había disfrutado en vida terrena.
Al escuchar esta parábola, seguro que pensamos que el arrepentimiento de aquél rico llegó demasiado tarde; que se dio cuenta de lo que sufría y fue entonces cuando levantó los ojos y pidió compasión. Sin embargo no se arrepintió ni pidió perdón a aquél mendigo que durante mucho tiempo había suplicado un poco de pan a su puerta.
¿Cuántas veces podemos comer al día? Normalmente todas las que nos apetezca; ¿cuántas veces nos acordamos de aquellos que pasan necesidad? Seguro que cuando escuchamos las noticias y vemos alguna catástrofe puntual. Pero cada día mueren miles de personas debido a la falta de alimento.
Tal vez debemos reflexionar y darnos cuenta de lo que nos asemejamos a ese rico que, vestido de lino, banqueteaba espléndidamente con sus amigos. Cada día tenemos la oportunidad de ser hermano del que tenemos al lado, compartiendo vida y ser con los más necesitados. Jesús hoy nos hace caer en la cuenta de nuestra situación. No es sólo una llamada de atención que conmueva temporalmente nuestro corazón.
Se trata de crear un estilo de vida distinto, regar la semilla del Reino de Dios que es justicia; y, por justicia, todo el mundo tiene derecho a vivir dignamente. Aún nos queda mucho que trabajar por los demás. El evangelio se escucha, se asimila, se vive en plenitud cuando convertimos desde ahora nuestro corazón a la Palabra hecha carne. Dios se acerca a nosotros para darnos un toque de atención a nuestra rica sociedad opulenta.
Muchos profetas han surgido en la historia para recordárnoslo; ojalá no sea demasiado tarde para empezar de nuevo, para vivir con la radicalidad que nos pide Jesús y para que el mundo que debemos crear, sea ese hogar donde todos tengan cabida, puesto que compartimos la misma dignidad de personas y de hijos de Dios.
