GRATITUD, LA GRAN VIRTUD DE LOS PEQUEÑOS
Queridos hermanos en el Señor:
Os deseo gracia y paz.
Según leemos en la Sagrada Escritura, el ángel Rafael que acompañó en su viaje a Tobías, le reúne junto con su padre Tobit y dice a los dos: “Alabad a Dios y dadle gracias ante todos los vivientes por los beneficios que os ha concedido; así todos cantarán y alabarán su nombre. Proclamad a todo el mundo las gloriosas acciones de Dios y no descuidéis darle gracias” (Tob 12,6).
El Salmo 136, que es un himno al amor eterno de Dios, comienza con estas palabras: “Dad gracias al Señor porque es bueno: porque es eterna su misericordia” (v. 1). Después de un recorrido por las principales etapas de la historia de la salvación, que va recordando y subrayando a través de la frase “porque es eterna su misericordia”, concluye: “Dad gracias al Dios del cielo: porque es eterna su misericordia” (v. 26).
La gratitud no es uno de los rasgos característicos de nuestra sociedad. En nuestras relaciones interpersonales, se va perdiendo el tono de la buena educación que hace aflorar espontáneamente en nuestros labios la palabra “gracias”. Nos cuesta expresar reconocimiento y valoración. Parece que todo se nos debe o que lo conseguimos como consecuencia de nuestros propios méritos.
En la oración suele ser más frecuente el tiempo que dedicamos a la súplica, a la petición, o incluso a la intercesión, que el que dedicamos a la acción de gracias. Es más frecuente decir “te pedimos” que “te damos gracias”.
La oración de la Iglesia se caracteriza por la gratitud, pues cuando celebra la Eucaristía, que es acción de gracias, manifiesta lo que ella misma es, su naturaleza de Pueblo de Dios agraciado y agradecido.
Jesús nos enseña a rezar con alegría y gratitud, desde la plenitud del Espíritu Santo: “En aquella hora, se llenó de alegría en el Espíritu Santo y dijo: "Te doy gracias, Padre, Señor del cielo y de la tierra, porque has escondido estas cosas a los sabios y entendidos, y las has revelado a los pequeños"” (Lc 10,21).
San Pablo expresa gratitud con frecuencia. Escribe a los Romanos: “En primer lugar, doy gracias a mi Dios por medio de Jesucristo; lo hago por todos vosotros, porque vuestra fe se proclama en todo el mundo” (Rm 1,8). A los Filipenses: “Doy gracias a mi Dios cada vez que os recuerdo” (Flp 1,3). A los Colosenses: “Sed también agradecidos” (Col 3,15). Y nos exhorta: “Dad gracias a Dios en toda ocasión: esta es la voluntad de Dios en Cristo Jesús respecto de vosotros” (1 Tes 5,18).
En estos primeros días de enero es conveniente dar gracias a Dios por sus acciones, también por aquellas que no comprendemos o cuyo profundo sentido se nos escapa. Es preciso dar gracias al Señor por las personas con las que compartimos fragmentos de nuestra vida. Y es justo dar gracias a las personas por tantos gestos de proximidad y ayuda, de colaboración y estímulo, de orientación y amistad.
De la mano de la Virgen María aprendemos a dar gracias, a decir con sinceridad: “Proclama mi alma la grandeza del Señor, se alegra mi espíritu en Dios, mi salvador; (…) porque el Poderoso ha hecho obras grandes en mí” (Lc 1,46–47.49).
