¿Cuál es la diferencia entre el primer soplo de vida y este que Jesús realiza sobre los apóstoles? Sin duda era la misma vida divina, porque Dios siempre se da a su medida, es decir, totalmente. Da su bondad, su verdad, su belleza, da su sabiduría. No obstante, hay una diferencia. Con el aliento de Jesús resucitado se nos da el Espíritu Santo. Es el primer fruto de la Pascua. Y con el Espíritu Santo, el perdón de los pecados. Y con el Espíritu Santo y el perdón de los pecados, la evidencia sencilla y alegre de la resurrección del Señor.
Pero Tomás no estaba allí, no estaba con el pequeño rebaño, y cuando vuelve… desprecia el testimonio de sus hermanos. Desconfía, como desconfiaron el primer hombre y la primera mujer: es la profunda llaga de nuestra naturaleza herida por el pecado. Tomás, desaparecido, está más cerca de Adán y de Eva, que de la Magdalena, Pedro, Juan y los discípulos de Emaús. Durante el Triduo Pascual hemos aprendido una lección: la serpiente es vencida no por el poder, sino por la humildad. Si Tomás fuese humilde, se elevaría hasta la fe que mueve montañas.
Quizás la falta de humildad sea el pecado más antiguo y más nuevo. No fiarnos más que de nuestra propia experiencia nos impide valorar la autoridad y el testimonio, el magisterio y el martirio. Nos hace, parafraseando a Nietzsche, “humanos, demasiado humanos”: hace que la prueba de la fe imagine sus cimientos no en el testimonio de los otros y del Otro, sino en una fantasía de razón que ignora sus límites, negando lo que no alcanza (¡racionalismo!) o en una fe que acentúa el objeto de la creencia en la emoción subjetiva (¡fideísmo!). Fiarnos únicamente de nosotros mismos nos priva de la plenitud de la luz y es entonces cuando, frente al Espíritu, aparece la carne y, frente al perdón, descuella la envidia. Y la fe se hace tibia: inquietan las virtudes heroicas de los santos; la evangelización se reduce a la tolerancia; se confunde la dignidad de la persona con la rendición ante la libertad del error y la libertad del mal.
Jesús regresa a los ocho días: es nuestro momento, el momento de la fe de Tomás, el momento del “dentro de tus llagas, escóndeme” que supone la eucaristía. Al comulgar en la Iglesia, con la fe y con la vida, me doy cuenta de que, a pesar de mis imperfecciones, “el justo vive de la fe”, es su alimento continuo. Confiesa que no crees con un fe perfecta y cree con la fe de la Iglesia. La de la Magdalena, Pedro, Juan y los discípulos de Emaús. Cree con la fe de María, que creyó siempre, viendo y sin ver, pues, cuando no veía, esperaba y amaba. Esta es la Virgen, esta es la Madre, esta es María, esta es la Iglesia.
