La salida de Gran Bretaña de la Comunidad Europea es sin duda un duro golpe a la construcción de Europa. Estamos asistiendo a dos tendencias opuestas en nuestro mundo. De un lado está la globalización del mercado que hace que todos los pueblos sean interdependientes los unos de los otros. Así se crea una comunidad “sui generis”, que algunos consideran una globalización de la miseria. De otra parte los conflictos entre los pueblos, y dentro de los propios países, parecen agudizarse cada vez más. En esta situación ya suficientemente peligrosa, Jesús parece echar todavía más leña al fuego diciendo: “He venido a traer división (Lc 12,49–53).
El fuego en la Biblia es una imagen del juicio de Dios. Cuando Dios se manifiesta establece la justicia. Dios se manifestará sobre todo en la pasión y resurrección de Jesús, que está caminando ahora hacia Jerusalén. Va deseoso de sumergirse en el bautismo de sufrimiento. El bautismo cristiano en agua y Espíritu, representado también como un fuego, es una participación en la muerte y resurrección de Jesús. Jesús podía haber optado por una vida sin complicaciones, sin embargo tomó sobre sí la cruz sin preocuparse del deshonor e infamia que comportaba. Fuego y agua serán los instrumentos de purificación y salvación del pueblo en el juicio de Dios. Éste se va a mostrar como un Dios de perdón y de misericordia.
El crucificado y resucitado será la bandera discutida ante la cual las personas tendrán que tomar postura y decidirse a favor o en contra de Él. Las primeras generaciones vivieron en su propia carne la división que producía en las familias la conversión del cristianismo y el abandono de la religión tradicional familiar. En ese sentido Jesús no ha venido a traer una paz fácil, como la que hoy día se busca en las familias. En nombre de la paz familiar se evita la confrontación sobre los valores que dan sentido a la convivencia familiar. Jesús es causa de división en el interior mismo de las relaciones familiares.
No se nace cristiano sino que se convierte uno en cristiano mediante una decisión personal muchas veces dolorosa porque cuestiona la herencia cultural recibida. La opción a favor de Jesús tendrá que soportar muchas veces la oposición de los pecadores, que pueden formar parte del mismo círculo familiar. Son muchas veces los padres los que disuaden a sus hijos de abrazar la vocación religiosa o sacerdotal y se la pintan como una vida aburrida o como una profesión sin relieve social.
Hay que mantener siempre fija nuestra mirada en Jesús, que inició y completa nuestra fe. Él es nuestra meta que no debemos perder de vista. No nos debe importar lo que digan nuestros familiares o nuestros mejores amigos. Nunca estaremos solos en ese seguimiento valiente de Jesús. Toda una nube ingente de testigos creyentes que han llegado ya a la meta nos contemplan y nos están animando (Hb 12,1–4).
Pertenecemos a un pueblo profético, que es capaz de descubrir la voluntad de Dios en cada momento. No siempre será cómodo el ponerla en práctica. Los profetas, buen ejemplo Jeremías, tuvieron que sufrir mucho de parte del pueblo por proclamar las exigencias de Dios en cada momento concreto de la historia (Jr 38,4–10). Su figura anuncia la de Jesús, rechazado también por el pueblo, del cual se verá excluido. Que nuestra participación en la eucaristía nos lleve a tomar partido a favor de Jesús y del evangelio.
