Como era costumbre para los judíos, y en fecha de pascua, se reunieron en el Templo consagrado a Dios multitud de personas; el comercio para los sacrificios era corriente en las cercanías del lugar sagrado, incluso dentro de los patios y del recinto del templo. Al llegar Jesús, parece que todo se le viene encima; seguramente recordó las palabras que Salomón le dirigía a Dios cuando lo construyó: aquí habitarás para siempre.
No había lugar para el comercio, para el intercambio de monedas, donde habitaba la presencia y la gloria de Dios; debía respetarse aquel templo como lugar de encuentro con el Dios en el que creían los judíos; y al tirar por el suelo todas aquellas mesas, la gente se extrañaba y se preguntaba quién era Él para hacer todo eso.
Al preguntarle por la autoridad por la que obraba así, Jesús les anuncia que destruiría el templo, pero el de su Cuerpo; ya, en ocasiones anteriores había manifestado a sus discípulos que el Hijo del hombre subiría a Jerusalén, sería condenado por los sumos sacerdotes y escribas y resucitaría al tercer día. Aquí y ahora se lo vuelve a decir a todos los que le escuchan.
Pero no fueron capaces de comprenderlo; se quedaron con la literalidad de sus palabras y previeron la caída de un templo que fue construido con mucho sacrificio para el pueblo judío. Jesús traspasaba las fronteras y proclamaba la necesidad de su muerte y resurrección.
Resulta curioso observar cómo los discípulos sólo entendieron esto tras su resurrección, y releyeron su vida a la luz de su exaltación por el Padre. Y es que el acontecimiento glorioso de la Pascua ilumina el corazón de aquellos creyentes y también el de los cristianos de hoy en día. La resurrección ilumina el entendimiento y hace comprender lo hermoso de seguir a un Dios que se ha querido hacer uno de nosotros para elevarnos a la categoría de hijos suyos en adopción.
Jesús conocía el interior de sus corazones y sabía de qué clase estamos hechos: dudas, temores, miedos, desconfianza… A pesar de todo esto, nada le impidió continuar el anuncio de su Evangelio, de su Buena Noticia; nada se opuso para subir al madero de la cruz y entregar su vida por todos nosotros.
