La figura del Bautista es fundamental en el ciclo del Adviento, porque nos anima y nos hace despertar del letargo: Preparad el camino del Señor; su invitación resuena especialmente en este tiempo de esperanza; una espera activa marcada necesariamente por la vigilancia.
Es curioso que el evangelista Lucas quiera remarcar los datos históricos en los que se sitúa la predicación de Juan. Quizá porque era importante, para generaciones futuras, saber que en un momento concreto de la historia sucedió todo lo que se narra en el Evangelio: que fue cierto y que el Hijo del hombre puso su tienda entre nosotros, aquí en la tierra.
Marchó Juan Bautista al desierto; un lugar teológico y de teofanía por excelencia: en muchas ocasiones se había manifestado Dios a su pueblo en ese lugar de soledad y de aridez. Ahora tocaba que el profeta Juan escuchara la voz de Dios y fuera enviado a predicar un bautismo de conversión.
Nos invita el Bautista, en este domingo del tiempo de esperanza, a cambiar de vida, a convertirnos para ver la salvación de Dios. Y es que urge la necesidad de volver nuestra mirada y nuestro corazón al Dios que nos ha creado para darnos cuenta de que somos barro, arcilla que Él un día modeló y que nosotros hemos ido deformando con el paso de los años y de nuestras infidelidades.
El adviento debe ayudarnos a preparar el camino, a allanar las sendas y rebajar las colinas de nuestra vida interior. Limar las asperezas que han surgido entre nosotros, buscar la senda de la paz y la justicia, levantar lo que está torcido en nuestras intenciones. Sólo así podrá habitar entre nosotros el Dios de la paz que una vez puso su tienda entre nosotros.
Juan es la voz que grita en el desierto: no susurra o sugiere, sino que grita: es necesaria la conversión; es preciso que cambiemos de vida, que hagamos de nuestro corazón de piedra un corazón más humano que sufra con las necesidades del mundo, que se alegre con sus logros y que se desgaste de amor a los demás.
Grita tú también, al igual que Juan, que está por venir el Mesías, que debemos allanar los caminos al Salvador; grita con fuerza en el desierto, a veces, puesto que parecerá que nadie escucha y grita también cuando todos estén pendientes de lo que dices. Grita y haz de profeta tú que has conocido el Evangelio que es Cristo y a través de ti todos podrán ver también la salvación de Dios.
