Zacarías e Isabel eran un matrimonio judío muy piadoso, ambos eran de edad avanzada y no tenían hijos. Ésta era su ilusión y así se lo pedían al Señor. El evangelio de este domingo nos cuenta cómo al final se va a producir lo que este matrimonio tanto anhelaba: el nacimiento de su primogénito.
Este nacimiento supone una gran alegría, así lo demuestra las felicitaciones que Isabel recibió de sus parientes y vecinos. Pero el evangelista quiere también que no olvidemos que el protagonista último es Dios. De hecho Isabel dio a luz a su hijo porque el Señor “le había hecho gran misericordia”. Dios ha elegido a este matrimonio anciano. No ha sido una elección al azar. Todo lo que Dios hace tiene una razón, aunque no la entendamos. En el capítulo primero, Lucas nos apunta algunos motivos que podrían explicar esta elección divina: “los dos eran justos ante Dios y caminaban sin tacha en todos los mandamientos y preceptos del Señor” (Lc 1,6).
A continuación el texto nos relata la cuestión de la imposición del nombre al niño. Como buenos judíos que eran Zacarías e Isabel cumplen con los ritos de su religión, a los 8 días había que circuncidar al niño y ése era el momento en el que el niño recibía el nombre (exactamente lo mismo que harán José y María a los ocho días que nazca Jesús Lc 2,21). La costumbre era que el niño recibiera el nombre de su padre, por eso se produce la extrañeza de los parientes cuando Isabel quiere ponerle el nombre de Juan. No es que Isabel quiera romper la costumbre de su pueblo, solamente Isabel, y también su marido, quieren obedecer lo que el ángel del Señor había pedido a Zacarías. La cuestión del nombre nos es presentada por Lucas como un ejercicio de obediencia a la voluntad de Dios por parte de los padres de Juan. Precisamente, esta obediencia de fe de los padres de Juan agradará a Dios e inmediatamente Zacarías volverá a recuperar el habla que había perdido en el Templo. Zacarías, una vez recuperada el habla y ya con el hijo tan esperado, sólo podía prorrumpir en una acción de gracias a Dios.
Esta escena: un niño nacido a una pareja anciana y estéril, el padre que había recuperado milagrosamente el habla, causó gran conmoción en todas las aldeas del contorno. Todo este evangelio está apuntando a que este niño que acaba de nacer no va a ser cualquier niño. Como muy bien Lucas concluye, este niño está tocado por la mano del Señor. Dios ha elegido a Juan. Y cuando Dios elige lo hace para una misión. Nosotros conocemos esta misión: Juan será el precursor, el que anuncia a Jesús. Juan “es la lámpara que brilla y nos ha mostrado a la luz sin igual que es Jesucristo”. Miremos a Juan, él nos invita a mirar a Cristo. Y sólo mirando a Cristo podemos encontrar el sentido pleno a nuestras vidas.
