La función de este milagro es la de ayudarnos a descubrir en Jesús al Mesías. Por eso más que en lo extraordinario, el lector, está llamado a captar la realidad que se esconde en este episodio, e interpretar la propuesta que Jesús está haciendo.
El relato de la multiplicación de los panes de Mateo tiene un claro trasfondo eucarístico y es figura del banquete en el Reino. Comienza expresando la compasión que experimenta Jesús al ver a la gente: «Se conmovió hasta las entrañas»; Es más que un sentimiento, es una apuesta por la vida. Por eso Jesús dedica todo el día a curar enfermos; No tiene apuros y pone toda su atención en los necesitados.
Cuando se empieza a hacer tarde los discípulos le piden que despida a la gente para que vayan a buscar algo para comer. Es un toque de realismo ya que están en un lugar despoblado y ellos no tienen para darles de comer. Ese aporte también implica una forma de ver la realidad, con la que Jesús no está de acuerdo. El propondrá otra. En la lógica de los discípulos, está implícito, el que cada uno se arregle como pueda. Frente a esto Jesús les propone otra alternativa: «Dadles vosotros de comer». Es una propuesta incluyente; Implicarse en la necesidad que la gente tiene, es ir más allá de la mirada realista para tener una mirada compasiva; Mirar como Dios. Es necesario que los discípulos asuman esta sensibilidad. Jesús no puede abandonar a la gente que ha ido junto a él.
La multiplicación de los panes y los peces es la acción más concreta de esta nueva realidad. Es significativa la forma de realizarse: reunirse en grupos, la bendición, el partir el pan y compartir. Todos comieron y quedaron satisfechos. Hay una sobreabundancia expresada en el número de comensales. Lo poco se ha convertido en mucho.
Una mirada para hoy
Lo único que Jesús hizo en aquel lugar desértico fue «curar» y «dar de comer» a la gente. Mirando nuestra realidad nos encontramos que el desafío de Jesús sigue siendo tremendamente actual. Hoy también hay una multitud que busca y necesita. La mirada compasiva sigue siendo la opción de los discípulos/as de Jesús. Más que nunca son necesarios los gestos de solidaridad que, puestos en manos del Señor, se multiplican en amor compasivo.
