Dicen que la fe es creer lo que no se ve; pues Bartimeo nos demuestra literalmente que esto es así. Sentado al borde del camino, marginado del resto de la gente; esperando que alguien le echara limosna para subsistir. Un ciego que no disfruta de la luz ni del color, del rostro de las personas ni de la belleza de la naturaleza.
Sin embargo tuvo la suerte de que por el camino en el que estaba sentado pasaba Jesús; quizá se lo dijeron o tal vez el murmullo y el tumulto de la gente que lo seguía le hizo preguntar quién era el que pasaba por allí; y entonces no perdió la oportunidad. Buscó su curación, buscó la posibilidad de entrar de nuevo en el camino como una persona nueva y capaz de contemplar todo lo que le rodeaba.
Suplicó compasión, que el Maestro, del que ya había oído hablar, se dignara acercarse a él y curara su ceguera; creyó sin ver; esperó sin mirar, no al menos con los ojos de su cuerpo, aunque sí con los de su corazón.
A pesar de que quisieron acallar sus gritos, insistía, porque en su corazón estaba el deseo de ver al Maestro, al Mesías; no quería dejar pasar la oportunidad; había escuchado que pasaba por allí Jesús; tenía que encontrarse con Él; estaba al borde del camino, pero quería estar de nuevo con los suyos, valiéndose por sí mismo y habiéndose encontrado cara a cara con Cristo.
Insiste más fuerte hasta que alguien le dice: ánimo, que te llama; no perdió el tiempo; dice el evangelio que dio un salto, dejó el manto, quizá lo único que tenía, y se acercó a Jesús. Todo va a transformarse desde aquél diálogo; el que fue ciego, de nuevo recobrará su vista.
Fue el encuentro con aquél en quien creyó lo que le cambió la vida; recobró la vista por su fe y entonces lo siguió por el camino. Se hizo su discípulo; no podía ser de otro modo, puesto que quien se encuentra cara a cara con Jesús, quien le conoce, no puede sino amarle, y amándolo se hace su seguidor.
La fe es creer sin ver; ¡dichosa ceguera, en este caso, que fue necesaria para que aquél hombre se encontrara con Jesús y de nuevo pudiera contemplar lo más hermoso de la vida: el amor de Dios!
