HOMILÍA
En este domingo, doce del tiempo ordinario, celebramos con solemnidad la fiesta de uno de los santos más importantes del calendario, aquel de quien Jesús dijo que era “el mayor de los nacidos de mujer.” Nos referimos a San Juan Bautista. Él fue un precursor, un profeta, un hombre que vivía con austeridad en el desierto, una persona coherente: enseñaba lo que vivía y vivía lo que enseñaba. Fue consciente de su papel, de su misión en la vida: “Yo no soy el Mesías.” Llegado el momento, supo indicarles a los suyos el camino que llevaba a Jesús.
Hoy nosotros recordamos su figura y nos preguntamos: ¿Qué es lo que nos enseña Juan a los cristianos de hoy? ¿Qué podemos aprender de él? ¿En qué sentido podemos decir que la vida y la persona de Juan son actuales? Él fue, decíamos, un precursor que anunció a Jesús, que habló de Jesús, que lo señaló. Nosotros somos cristianos. Desde nuestro bautismo, somos también precursores de Jesús. Nuestras palabras, nuestra vida, nuestro testimonio deben anunciar a Jesús ¿Qué clase de cristianos seríamos si los demás nunca nos oyeran hablar de Él? Si es verdad lo que dice ese refrán “que de la abundancia del corazón, habla la boca” y nuestra boca nunca habla de Jesús ¿no será que tampoco está en nuestro corazón, que no es alguien que nos apasione o que llene de verdad nuestra vida?
Juan fue un hombre coherente entre lo que decía y lo que vivía. ¿Lo somos nosotros? ¿Nos decimos cristianos pero no echamos la carne en el asador a la hora de serlo de verdad? ¿Nos hacemos un cristianismo a la carta que nos resulte cómodo y fácil de vivir, rechazando lo que es exigente y comprometido? ¿Bautizamos a los más pequeños y les llevamos a hacer la primera comunión mientras los adultos no nos tomamos en serio lo que eso implica? Ser coherentes, como Juan, es difícil pero es un reto que tenemos que asumir si queremos, hoy como ayer, ser creíbles en un mundo que valora más el testimonio que la palabra. “Nuestro mundo, escribía Juan Pablo II, necesita más testigos que maestros o maestros sólo en la medida en que sean también testigos.” Tomemos conciencia de ello.
Juan vivió con austeridad como un signo de la verdad que llevaba dentro. Nosotros vivimos con una cierta abundancia mientras, a nuestro alrededor, muchos sufren las consecuencias de la pobreza, de la riqueza mal repartida. Así nos lo recordaba Cáritas en la fiesta del Corpus. Algunos de los que se acercaban a Juan para preguntarle cómo tenían que vivir recibieron de él esta respuesta contundente: “El que tenga dos túnicas que las reparta con el que no tiene y el que tenga comida, haga lo mismo.” Poniéndonos la mano en el corazón, todos deberíamos tratar de responder a esta pregunta ¿En qué medida podría yo compartir, más y mejor, mis bienes, mis conocimientos y mi tiempo con los que los necesitan?
Juan fue decapitado. En la vida de un cristiano, la persecución y las dificultades pueden ser una realidad que no nos debe extrañar. Hoy no existe el peligro de morir mártires como él pero sí podemos ser víctimas de un ambiente hostil, contrario a los valores del evangelio que tratamos de proclamar. Pidamos a San Juan valentía y fortaleza, coherencia y austeridad.
