¿Por qué hay que morir, si, desde lo más hondo de nuestro ser, nos sentimos hechos para vivir? Algo se rebela muy dentro de nosotros antela muerte. Lavida debería ser distinta para todos, más hermosa, más feliz, más segura, más larga. En el fondo vivimos anhelando vida eterna.
No es difícil entender la actitud, hoy bastante generalizada, de vivir sin pensar en «la otra vida». ¿Para qué, si sólo estamos seguros de ésta? ¿No es mejor concentrar todas nuestras energías en disfrutar al máximo de nuestra existencia actual? ¿No ha llegado la hora de escuchar al profesor Tierno Galván, «instalados perfectamente en la finitud» y aprender a vivir y morir sin refugiarnos en ilusiones de resurrección o vida eterna?
Son preguntas que están en la conciencia del hombre contemporáneo. Pero esta actitud, aparentemente tan sensata y realista, ¿es la postura más sabia o es, más bien, la resignación de quien se cierra al misterio último de la existencia mientras, en su interior, todo es protesta?
Sin duda, esta vida finita encierra un gran valor. Es muy grande vivir aunque sólo sea unos años. Es muy grande amar, gozar, crear un hogar, luchar por un mundo mejor. Pero hay algo que, honradamente, no podemos eludir: la verdad última de todo proceso – lo afirma la ciencia en todos los campos – sólo se capta en profundidad desde el final. Si lo único que nos espera a todos y a cada uno de nosotros es la nada, ¿qué sentido último pueden tener nuestros trabajos, esfuerzos y progresos?, ¿qué decir de los que han muerto sin haber disfrutado de felicidad alguna?, ¿cómo hacer justicia a quienes han muerto por defenderla?, ¿qué decir de tantas vidas malogradas, perdidas o sacrificadas?, ¿qué esperanza puede haber para ellos?, y ¿qué esperanza puede haber para nosotros mismos que no tardaremos en desaparecer de esta vida sin haber visto cumplidos nuestros deseos de felicidad y plenitud?
El misterio último de la vida exige alguna respuesta. En alguna ocasión, E. Chillida decía así: «De la muerte, la razón me dice que es definitiva. De la razón, la razón me dice que es limitada.» Desde los límites y la oscuridad de la razón humana, los creyentes nos abrimos con confianza al misterio de Dios. La invocación del salmista lo dice todo: «Dios mío, en Ti confío, no quede yo defraudado» (Sal 25, 1-2).
Lo único que sostiene al creyente es su fe en el poder salvador de ese Dios que, según Jesús, «no es Dios de muertos, sino de vivos». Dios no es sólo el creador de la vida; es el resucitador que la lleva a su plenitud.
