Novedades… una sección de los centros comerciales y de las librerías.. artículos de moda… suceso reciente… No nos sirve ninguna de estas definiciones de la palabra novedad. Tenemos que buscar otra definición y, afortunadamente, aunque esté en el baúl de las palabras en desuso, el diccionario todavía no la ha desechado: novedad es la admiración que causa lo antes no visto ni oído. Esta es la que casa con las lecturas de la misa de hoy: abrir “a los gentiles la puerta de la fe”; “mira, hago nuevas todas las cosas”; “os doy un mandamiento un mandamiento nuevo”. Estas son, y los serán siempre, las verdaderas novedades que cambian la vida de la humanidad y de todos los que formamos parte de ella. Pero, ¿en qué consiste la novedad?
La novedad del mandamiento del amor no está en el objeto, pues seguimos siendo llamados a amar a Dios y a amar al prójimo. La novedad está en la referencia, en el “como”: ahora tenemos que amar como él nos ha amado. Ya no, como nos amamos a nosotros mismos, sino como él nos ha amado y con su mismo amor. Esta revolución del amor conduce a una nueva cultura y a una nueva ciudad que, a modo de anticipo y de prenda, se vive en la Iglesia y en la eucaristía y que de modo definitivo será vivida como cielo nuevo y tierra nueva a la vuelta del Señor, tras el juicio. A esta novedad se accede por una puerta que, aunque no exenta de tribulaciones y exigiendo perseverancia, está ya abierta para todos: todos están convocados a pasar por ella. ¿Dónde está? Es el costado abierto del Señor. Del mismo modo que del costado de Adán fue extraída una costilla para formar a Eva, su esposa y madre de la humanidad; del costado abierto de Cristo nace una nueva realidad católica o universal que es la convocación de todos los pueblos redimidos por su sangre: es la Iglesia, la nueva esposa y la nueva madre. En sentido estricto, no hay otra novedad que la misericordia de Dios en Jesucristo salvador, vivida en la Iglesia.
Ante esta realidad que vislumbramos es necesaria la fe. Una fe que crezca en la contemplación y en la adoración, en los sacramentos y en el socorro y cuidado de los miembros más débiles de este cuerpo de Cristo. Con María, puerta de la Misericordia, no nos extraviaremos y cruzaremos la puerta.
