Una práctica muy antigua que llega hasta hoy.
Con el cristianismo nace la práctica de ayudar materialmente a quienes tienen la misión de anunciar el Evangelio, para que puedan entregarse enteramente a su ministerio, atendiendo también a los menesterosos (cf. Hch 4,34; 11,29).
Los anglosajones, tras su conversión, a finales del siglo VIII, se sintieron tan unidos al Obispo de Roma que decidieron enviar de manera estable una contribución anual al Santo Padre. Así nació el “Denarius Sancti Petri” (Limosna a San Pedro), que pronto se difundió por los países europeos.
Ésta, como otras costumbres semejantes, ha pasado por muchas y diversas vicisitudes a lo largo de los siglos, hasta que fue regulada de manera orgánica por el Papa Pío IX en la Encíclica “Saepe Venerabilis” (5 de agosto de 1871).
Esta colecta se realiza actualmente en todo el mundo católico, en la “Jornada mundial de la caridad del Papa”, el 29 de junio o el domingo más próximo a la solemnidad de San Pedro y San Pablo.
