Los cristianos de las Iglesias occidentales ya no hablamos de persecución ni de martirio. Y sin embargo, según Jesús, la persecución es, en un grado u otro, ingrediente normal de la vida cristiana.
Toda la tradición evangélica es unánime en afirmar que la fidelidad a Cristo produce persecución. El rechazo y el conflicto no han sido solamente el destino histórico de Jesús sino que, de ordinario, es el destino que espera a sus seguidores: "Si a mí me han perseguido, también a vosotros os perseguirán".
Por ello, si la persecución no está presente de ninguna forma y en ningún grado en los cristianos y en la Iglesia, hemos de preguntarnos, al menos, cuál puede serla razón. Quépuede haber ocurrido para que ya nadie persiga hoy a las comunidades cristianas del Primer Mundo.
La persecución no es algo que sucede, de repente, debido a la maldad o ceguera de algunos perseguidores. La verdadera persecución comienza a gestarse cuando la Iglesia se convierte en amenaza para los intereses egoístas e injustos de los sectores más poderosos e influyentes de una sociedad.
Por eso, la persecución no se dirige normalmente a todos los cristianos por igual, sino más bien a aquellos que, movidos por el espíritu de Jesucristo, ponen en peligro un determinado "orden de cosas" establecido. Incluso, puede suceder que, mientras unos cristianos son víctimas de una persecución más o menos declarada, otros sean alabados y privilegiados.
Todo ello se explica porque en la raíz de toda persecución a las Iglesias cristianas se esconde siempre la voluntad de neutralizar la fuerza transformadora que se encierra en el cristianismo cuando es vivido por los creyentes con todas sus consecuencias.
Por eso, la ausencia de una verdadera persecución en el mundo occidental puede significar que nadie siente necesidad de acosar hoy la fe para tratar de anularla, pues los mismos cristianos nos encargamos de vaciarla de su fuerza con la mediocridad y rutina de nuestras vidas.
Puede ser también signo de que vivimos esa fe de manera privada e intimista, sin repercusión alguna en la vida pública y social.
Por eso, hemos de saber valorar desde la fe ciertos rechazos, ataques y agresividad que la Iglesia comienza a sufrir entre nosotros estos últimos años. Es un buen síntoma para una Iglesia que busca permanecer fiel a Jesucristo.
