LA RENUNCIA DE UN HUMILDE TRABAJADOR
DE LA VIÑA DEL SEÑOR
Las primeras palabras que pronunció Su Santidad el Papa Benedicto XVI el martes 19 de abril de 2005, desde el balcón central de la Basílica Vaticana, fueron: “Queridos hermanos y hermanas: después del gran Papa Juan Pablo II, los señores cardenales me han elegido a mí, un simple y humilde trabajador de la viña del Señor”.
Su proverbial humildad ha quedado patente en tantos gestos de servicio discreto a lo largo de su intenso pontificado.
También ahora, en esta iniciativa, libre y consciente, de renunciar al ministerio que se le había encomendado, su actitud es admirable.
El Santo Padre ha meditado delante de Dios y ha tomado una decisión que nos llena de admiración y de gratitud. Admiración por la fortaleza interior que demuestra. Admiración por la delicadeza de su expresión. Admiración por la fecha significativa en que se produjo el anuncio –en la Jornada Mundial del Enfermo– como asociándose al misterio de una vida que también incluye y acepta el debilitamiento físico. Admiración por su deseo de seguir sirviendo a la Iglesia a través de esta determinación.
Y gratitud. Profunda gratitud por sus fecundos años de pontificado. Y también, en perspectiva, por su vida de entrega generosa en su condición de excelente teólogo, magnífico pastor y extraordinaria persona. Su bondad y su sabiduría nos seguirán acompañando siempre.
En estos momentos deseo unirme a la oración de toda la Iglesia, y exhorto a todos los creyentes a elevar fervientes oraciones para que el Señor siga acompañando al Santo Padre, le conceda fuerza física y aliento espiritual.
Que la gracia del Señor inspire, sostenga y acompañe a Benedicto XVI.
