La presencia de la miseria en nuestro mundo interpela a todo hombre de buena voluntad, tanto a creyentes como no creyentes. Sigue siendo el gran escándalo de la fe en la bondad de Dios. Jesús luchó sin tregua contra todo lo que impide la felicidad del hombre. No hizo una revolución mágica y milagrosa que hiciera desaparecer todos los males de manera instantánea. Introdujo, en cambio, una revolución silenciosa que ha ido dando fruto a lo largo de los siglos. Se trata de vencer el mal con el bien.
Para llevar adelante este proyecto Jesús invitó a un grupo de jóvenes a los que formó como discípulos suyos. A ellos les contagió su pasión por la justicia y por el Reino. A través de sus milagros, hoy hemos escuchado la curación de un sordomudo, se nos muestra hasta qué punto Jesús se siente tocado por las miserias humanas y actúa para poner remedio. Eso hace exclamar a las muchedumbres: “Todo lo hizo bien” (Mc 7,31–37).
Frente al sufrimiento, muchos se preguntan: ¿“dónde está Dios”?, o ¿“qué le he hecho yo a Dios para que me trate así”? En vez de perdernos en preguntas con las que intentamos justificar nuestra pereza, debemos más bien pensar: ¿“qué puedo hacer yo para aliviar ese sufrimiento”? Se trata de inyectar constantemente el bien en este mundo plagado de males, poner vida en este estas realidades de muerte. En realidad, eso es lo que está haciendo Dios incesantemente. Si el mundo no se hunde en el caos, es porque Dios y los suyos están constantemente luchando para que exista el orden y la felicidad. El Pueblo de Dios vivió con la confianza en esa utopía de que Dios iba a intervenir inmediatamente para cambiar la situación del mundo (Is 35,4–7). Los escépticos dirán que son buenas palabras, pero que el mundo sigue siendo un desastre.
Nuestros ojos y nuestros oídos están ya condicionados y educados por los medios de comunicación para descubrir inmediatamente los males. No está mal si ese espíritu crítico nos ayuda a cambiar las cosas. Ante tanta miseria nuestros corazones se conmueven y experimentamos una cierta mala conciencia. Desgraciadamente, a veces, simplemente echamos las culpas a los demás y nos sentimos impotentes para hacer algo. Al final nos quedamos tan tranquilos esperando que las autoridades arreglen el mundo.
El apóstol Santiago nos pone un caso concreto en el que la fe cristiana nos invita a actuar para cambiar las relaciones sociales (Sant 2,1–5). En el mundo son los ricos los que mandan y los que tienen voz. A los pobres se los silencia y se les ignora. A veces desgraciadamente también en la Iglesia nos hemos comportado así y hemos buscado el estar a bien con los ricos. En cambio, para Jesús, los pobres fueron los preferidos porque ellos eran los herederos del Reino. El camino de la Iglesia pasa a través de los pobres. La opción preferencial por los pobres, sin por ello excluir a los ricos, implica una conversión profunda de nuestra manera de pensar y de administrar los recursos eclesiales. Que la celebración de esta eucaristía nos haga sensibles a los pobres de nuestro entorno y nos lleve a trabajar por un mundo más justo y fraterno.
