Quizá la intención de la pregunta que Jesús lanza a sus discípulos no era exclusivamente la de averiguar qué pensaba la gente sobre Él o con quién lo comparaban. Elías, el Bautista, uno de los antiguos profetas… Disparidad de respuestas, todas ellas relacionadas con grandes personajes bíblicos que mostraban la salvación de Dios.
En este momento crucial de la vida de Jesús, antes de comenzar su viaje hacia Jerusalén, lugar de su crucifixión, Él da un paso más en el desvelamiento de su vida y de su persona. Jesús da un paso más; dirigiéndose a los que le seguían por el camino personaliza su pregunta: ¿quién decís vosotros que soy yo? Quedaban atrás las opiniones de los demás, quizá porque ellos le habían conocido personalmente y lo habían conocido más de cerca. Aquellos discípulos iban descubriendo a través de los milagros, de los discursos, de la forma de actuar de Jesús quién era realmente.
Y entonces Pedro lo señala como el Mesías, el Ungido de Dios. Para los que desde hacía siglos esperaban al libertador de Israel, esta respuesta de Pedro no era sino la ratificación de que la promesa se cumplía en Jesús. Había llegado, ya estaba en el mundo el esperado, el enviado por Dios para mostrar a todos la salvación.
Sin embargo aún quedaba algo, por eso les mandó callar y que no se lo dijeran a nadie; como si les faltara por aprender parte del camino: el Mesías debe padecer, ser contado entre los malhechores, ser ejecutado y resucitar. Los discípulos habían sido testigos de milagros; más tarde verían de lejos la crucifixión de su Mesías y se encontrarían de nuevo con el Resucitado.
Es necesario renunciar a todo, cargar con la cruz y seguirle. El que quiera salvar su vida debe perderla por Jesús y por el evangelio. El camino del discípulo no se queda solamente en lo amable de la figura de Jesús, en sus milagros y curaciones. Hay que dar un paso más: hay que negarse a sí mismo, morir, como el grano de trigo para ser fecundo y dar fruto abundante.
Como aquellos discípulos nosotros le señalamos como el Mesías, el Salvador de la humanidad; pero qué poco aprendemos de su cruz, del negar nuestro yo y nuestros intereses a favor del Reino de Dios. El que quiera seguirle que cargue con su cruz y le siga. Un camino con tropiezos en el que siempre encontramos la mano amiga de Cristo dispuesta a levantarnos.
Pedro le señaló como el Mesías, nosotros como nuestro Dios y Señor. Pero la vida de Cristo, no olvidemos, se entiende sólo a la luz de su muerte y resurrección.
