Las palabras pronunciadas por Jesús en este largo discurso del pan de vida, anonadan a sus oyentes; tomado por loco y blasfemo, resultaba difícil entender sus palabras, y en aquellos momentos muchos dejaron de seguirle y escucharle. ¿Quién podía hacerle caso?
En estos momentos anuncia ya su glorificación a la derecha del Padre; su vuelta al lugar de donde venía y de un modo radicalmente nuevo; si vierais al Hijo del hombre subir donde estaba antes… Por si parecía poco todo lo que había anunciado ya y los milagros que había realizado, aun les anunciaba que quedaba mucho por contemplar.
Sólo desde la experiencia profunda que nace en el interior del hombre por medio de la llama del Espíritu Santo puede entenderse todo este discurso. Más allá de la literalidad de sus palabras, Jesús había anunciado un nuevo modo de acercarse a Dios; quizá el único: a través de Él mismo. Sólo el que conoce al Hijo puede llegar al Padre y sólo el que se alimenta del pan de la vida puede tener vida eterna.
Muchos de aquellos discípulos que habían seguido sus discursos hasta entonces se echaron atrás, porque resultaban duras al oído de un judío piadoso: asemejarse a Dios, superior a Moisés, un alimento que traspasaba las fronteras del maná del desierto con el que se había alimentado Israel. No resultaba fácil asimilar todo lo que Jesús estaba predicando en aquellos momentos; pero sus palabras son espíritu y vida y sólo desde un corazón abierto podían entenderse.
La misma pregunta que dirigía a los que allí quedaron también resuena hoy en nuestros oídos; ¿también nosotros queremos abandonarle? Sus palabras nos dan la vida, pero también pueden resultar incomprensibles si no las miramos desde un corazón creyente.
Cuando están a la orden del día las mediocridades y la falta de compromiso, Jesús nos mira al corazón y nos pregunta si estamos dispuestos a seguirle y contemplar su glorificación plena en la cruz y la resurrección.
Pedir constantemente que aumente nuestra fe y nuestra confianza en el Espíritu para llegar a conocer profundamente a Cristo es una tarea que urge en los tiempos que corren; no porque sean mejores ni peores, sino porque hacen falta testigos coherentes con el evangelio de la vida que hemos recibido y del que se nos ha constituido mensajeros.
Para ello es necesario alimentarnos de su Cuerpo, de su propia vida, tomar el pan vivo bajado del cielo que es la vida del mundo. Una experiencia así transformará nuestro interior y hará que nos unamos a la respuesta de Pedro: ¿adónde vamos a ir? Tú tienes palabras de vida eterna.
