La fuerza de los profetas del Antiguo Testamento residía en la palabra recibida. La fuerza de los profetas del Nuevo, en el amor “que ha sido derramado en nuestros corazones con el Espíritu Santo que se nos ha dado”. Y si la palabra de Dios recibida y proclamada hace que los seres humanos resistan frente a reyes y príncipes, ante sacerdotes y gente del pueblo; el amor de Dios hace que todo anuncio conlleve el amor a los que nos odian. Con Jesús y el Espíritu Santo desaparece la referencia a uno mismo –autorreferencialidad diría el papa Francisco– y queda el amor, la caridad que no es intercambio o negocio, sino don.
San Pablo, el apóstol de los gentiles, cuya conversión se ha convertido en una fiesta de unidad, explica a los corintios qué es el amor. Intenta mostrar lo que es inefable, por eso suma tantos adjetivos: paciente, afable, no tiene envidia, no es presumido, no se engríe, disculpa, cree, espera, aguanta. Y todo, sin límites. Este amor es la caridad verdadera y para entender este himno paulino que sirve hoy de segunda lectura, tenemos que darnos cuenta de su carácter cristológico. ¿Cómo? Sustituyendo la palabra “amor” por la palabra “Jesucristo”; un concepto, por una experiencia; una cosa, por una persona: la de Jesucristo, hijo de Dios, hijo de María.
El amor… no es una experiencia dulzona… no es el gozo de compartir… no son palabras... ni palabrería. El amor es la más grande exigencia: el amor es decir la verdad y vivir en verdad; es ser sarmiento de la vid. El amor, por consiguiente, es odiado por el mundo. Casi podría decirse que lo más odiado es el amor y la verdad es que no resulta chocante cuando vemos a Jesucristo a punto de ser despeñado por un barranco cercano a Nazaret. No resulta chocante cuando vemos que nuestro Amor está crucificado. A María, puerta de la Misericordia, le imploramos este vigor de profetas en el amor.
