Ascensión del Señor
Vosotros sois testigos de esto: En esta pequeña frase se encierra gran parte de la misión de la Iglesia; hoy Jesús asciende al cielo; vino del Padre y de nuevo vuelve a Él habiendo reconciliado a toda la humanidad con su muerte y resurrección. Cristo es exaltado. Al celebrar hoy la fiesta de la Ascensión del Señor al Cielo, conmemoramos el día en que su vida había llegado a la plenitud. Todo se había cumplido y ahora llegaba el momento de regresar al regazo del Padre, de donde había salido, llevando en sus manos un mundo nuevo y reconciliado.
Jesús se iba, dejando a los apóstoles la misión de ser testigos de todo lo que habían visto, oído y experimentado a lo largo de aquellos tres maravillosos años. Todo se había cumplido: el Mesías padeció y resucitó. Todo según lo había prometido la Escritura. Nació y resucitó, y en medio, toda una vida entregada al servicio de los demás predicando el Reino de Dios, el perdón de los pecados.
Ahora en su nombre, la Iglesia, la comunidad de los creyentes, deben predicar la conversión y el perdón de los pecados. A modo de resumen de lo que había significado la vida de Jesús, el texto del evangelio de Lucas que hoy leemos nos presenta a las puertas del inicio de la historia de la Iglesia. Jesús había mostrado el camino de un modo de vivir totalmente nuevo.
Les había ido indicando cómo debían vivir, lo que debían anunciar tras su marcha al Padre; se marchaba al Padre pero no les iba a quedar solos; era necesario regresar para que se cumplieran las escrituras en plenitud.
Ser testigos del perdón de los pecados implica vivir con la misericordia por bandera; si Cristo había muerto por nuestra salvación, por la de todos sin excepción, aquellos discípulos, la nueva Iglesia naciente, debería ser testigo de este perdón con su propia vida y con su ejemplo. Un nuevo estilo de vida, una conversión profunda del corazón que pasaba necesariamente por volver la mirada al que fue exaltado a la derecha de Dios Padre.
La Iglesia es testigo, es mártir, es testimonio vivo de la gloria de Dios acaecida en Cristo. Ahí está su misión y el motivo de su existencia: continuar la predicación y la extensión del Reino de Dios que es paz, justicia y amor.
Pero no quedarían desamparados aquellos discípulos; les sería enviado lo prometido: la fuerza del Espíritu Santo; mientras tanto quedarían en la ciudad alabando a Jesús en el templo y dando testimonio de esta verdad que ellos conocían y habían vivido en sus propias carnes.
En la fiesta de la Ascensión, revivimos esta exaltación de Cristo y retomamos la misión de ser testigos fieles de lo que creemos por la fe.
