En la misma línea de salvación del domingo anterior, se sitúa este evangelio que leemos hoy. Dios ha venido a llamar a los pecadores. Y Zaqueo se sentía pequeño y pobre delante del Maestro, incluso hasta su descripción física así nos lo hace ver. Por eso tuvo que subirse a un árbol para poderle llamar la atención a Jesús.
Y al pasar por allí el Maestro levantó la cabeza. ¡Cuántos encuentros memorables nos narran los evangelios! Pero este está cargado de muchísimo significado para Zaqueo. A partir de aquél instante cambió radicalmente su vida; quizá fue la simple curiosidad lo que movió al jefe de publicanos y rico a querer ver a Jesús. Fuera lo que fuese, el caso es que cuando bajó de la higuera Zaqueo convirtió su vida.
Una profunda conversión que podemos observar en las líneas siguientes cuando pretende dar su mitad a los pobres y en el caso de que hubiera robado a alguno le restituiría hasta cuatro veces más. Se dio cuenta de que la felicidad no residía en las riquezas temporales que pudiera acumular. Le faltaba algo. Quizá la alegría con que recibió a Jesús en su casa.
Aquél hijo de Abraham se había encontrado cara a cara con Dios y su vida no había permanecido de la misma manera. ¡Qué tendría la personalidad de Jesús para embaucar tan maravillosamente a la gente que buscaba la Verdad! Emocionante seguro que sería la comida que ofreció al Maestro, atento a sus explicaciones porque había venido a visitarle y porque le daba la oportunidad de empezar de nuevo. Había colmado sus expectativas y quería seguirle como uno de sus discípulos.
Sin embargo, también levantó las envidias de aquellos que, como el fariseo del templo, se consideraban ya salvados y sin necesidad de conversión. Señalaron a Jesús como pecador al entrar bajo el mismo techo que un publicano, pecador público. Aquel murmullo de “ha entrado a hospedarse en casa de un pecador”, hizo que Jesús abriera la salvación a la casa de Zaqueo, todo esto unido, claro está, al deseo de conversión que tenía el publicano.
Hoy puede entrar también la salvación a nuestra casa, a nuestra familia, a nuestro hogar y a nuestro entorno, si de verdad buscamos con ansia el rostro de Cristo que camina cerca de nosotros. Su mirada tierna y misericordiosa nos hará descubrir el perdón y la necesidad que tenemos de una profunda conversión del corazón y de nuestras actitudes.
